OUT for Sustainability launched in January 2009 by a diverse group
of like minded individuals with the goal to bring together their
passion for social and environmental sustainability with their
sexual orientation. Since then we have grown to advocate for new
levels of sustainability and LGBTQ inclusion in the individuals and
organizations we encounter. OFS has held events ranging from a
Queer DIY workshop, 'Earth Gay' service project and reception for
the 1st green award from the GSBA. We've has consulted with Seattle
Pride, Lifelong AIDS Alliance and the GSBA. We've created
educational tools including a matrix for both environmental and
social sustainability. And we've been a vocal presence at events
ranging from Greenfest to AIDS Walk. Looking forward, OUT for
Sustainability believes that this intersection of sustainability
and the LGBTQ community is the next step of maturity for both
movements. Sustainability is no longer confined to a demographic
that is historically hetero-normative. The LGBTQ community identity
has grown to where involvement in politics, religion and family are
all viable options. Sustainability can be that next step in our
development, connecting us locally and globally to build a stronger
community and earth to live on. Our vision is a world where the
fullest measure of sustainability and LGBTQ celebration is lived
out. By then, there will be no need for us! Until then, we'll keep
sustainability fun, LGBTQ strong and see a better world where
everyone, including future generations, can thrive.
